Balinese Calendar System

Balinese Calendar System is different than another calendar system. Most people know of two kinds of calendar system: the Solar System and the Lunar System. The Solar system , mostly used internationally, is based on how many days the earth rotates around the sun ; so one year has an average 365 days. The Lunar System ( used in some Asian countries, is based on the time taken by the moon to rotate around the Earth ; which is 29 days + 12 hours + 44 minutes so that equation times 12 equals 1 year for the lunar system.

Bali uses yet another calendar system.

Bali uses the wuku System ( based on the week . There are 30 weeks in one cycle (Balinese : oton)and two Otons in one year, so one Oton means 210 days and one year in the Balinese Calendar System is two Otons or 420 days).

The Balinese Calendar system is used mainly for religious purposes such as : to know the auspicious days for farming & raising animals, starting a Bussiness, determining the dates of temple ceremonies, and making birthday ceremonies (otonan) and others.(ruslan)

Ubud Story

Ubud, when we tell the story of Ubud, we can't forget to mention the Campuhan river. The foreign artist, such as Antonio Blanco, Rudolf Bonnet and Arie Smith, for instance, were so inspired by this river , that it's one of the main reasons for them making Ubud their home.According to the lontar, which are dried, pressed and blessed palm leaves, tied together to make a small vertical book on which the ancient Hindu teachings are written ).

Ubud area was "founded" by Rsi Markandya, the Hindu Priest from java, who was making spiritual journey to Bali. When he arrived at a jungle area ( which now has became known as Ubud ), he felt an aura of holiness in this area. So he settled up in this place.

" Markandya Purana ", one of the Hindu mythological books, said that the word Ubud words comes from wos, the name of a river in the area. This river has a meeting point with another river next to Pura Gunung Lebah, in Champuan village. The root word of wos is usadi or usada, which means obat or Ubad to have a healing power since many sick people get well after they bathe in this river.
Nowadays, the word ubad is pronounced as Ubud to name the area.

Ubud art is part of a lot of traditional Balinese painting took on a different direction than to other parts of Bali. The influences of Western artist who visited and lived in and around Ubud in the 1930s onward change traditional art in Ubud forever.European artists introduced perspective, anatomy, dimension, and use of color in a different way to the local artists, and Ubud's art has never been the same. Coloring in local art before the 1930s was only of natural colors made of pigments from the forest and nature in general. Introduction of oil paints by Europeans ( and later of acrylics) changed the view of how one use color in a painting. Classic Balinese art-arts before these influences-had simple use of color in a two dimensional style. The Europeans showed how dimension and perspective could be enhanced by use of color and its intensity. Although this influence has been strong, there is still a definite Balinese style that comes through the paintings to this day.

Balinese art is not just about style or use of color, but the ideas of life, death, and morals. Subjects that are greater than the single individual and also important in a mythological sense. Local artist also paint scenes from the rice fields, fishing, love, and everyday life as do artist around the world. Our art is also a part of our culture and religion, and not seen as something 'separate'- it is connected to all of life and living. All art in here is connected- painting, sculpture, music and dance, and with religion, in ceremony. As we see the Gods, human and nature all connected. TAMAN AYUN TEMPLE | PLACE OF INTEREST

Taman Ayun Temple is once of the famous temple in Bali, the located in Mengwi village, Mengwi district, Badung regency, about 18 kilometers nort part of Denpasar city.according to the "lontar" ( skrip) of "Babad Mengwi" Taman Ayun temple was build in 1634. Taman Ayun is made by two words Taman and Ayun, Taman is mean park, garden with beautiful flower and pool, and Ayun is made by the word Hyun is mean 'wish'. Taman Ayun is mean a park or beautiful garden that can make your wish to be come true.

Archeological data's.

In the left side of the first stage door of Taman Ayun temple is had two historical build thats called " Batu Aya " and "Bedugul Krama Carik " is a build from the megalitics era (500 BC), is a Menhir.

What the interesting in Taman Ayun ?

This temple is very old and beautiful, the garden is very green, beautiful and wide, the art of the stone carving is very artistics and old, especialy the art of the mean temple door, is very unique. The pool with the lotus flowers surroundings the temple is make the temple looks more beautiful and harmony. It is good for your mind and soul. Outside of the temple is had a lot of small "warung" shop to sell fruit and cold drink.

The History

Although there are no artifacts of records dating back to the Stone Age, it is believed that the first settlers on Bali migrated from China around 2500 B.C. By the Bronze era, around 300 B.C., a fairly evolved culture already existed on Bali. The complex system of irrigation and rice production, still in use today, was established around this time. It appears that the mainreligion around 500 A.D. Was predominantly Buddhist in influence. In 670 A.D., a Chinese scholar ( Yi-Tsing ), on a trip to India, reported that he had visited a Buddhist country called Bali.

The People
Life in Bali is very communal with the organisation of villages, farming and even the creative arts being decided by the community. The local government is responsible for schools, clinics, hospitals and roads, but all other aspects of life are placed in the hands of two traditional commitees, whose roots in Balinese culture stretch back centuries. The first, Subak concerns the production of rice and organises the complex irrigation system. Everyone who own a Sawah , or padi field must join their local Subak, which ensures that every member gets his fair share of irrigation water. Balinese people can not saparated with their creativity on art, they have a lot of philosophy, one of that is Tri Hita Karana, and they also believe in Karmaphala.

Religion
Balinese people are Hindus, yet their religion is very different from the Indian variety. The Balinese worship the Hindu trinity; Brahma, Visnu and Shiva. who are seen as manifestations of the Supreme God " Sang Hyang Widhi".

TRI HITA KARANA

Tri Hita Karana is an ancient Balinese wisdom,it is a spiritual principle that deeply rooted in the ancient culture of Indonesia and it is still popular on the island of Bali. Tri means "Three". Hita is mean " Welfare" and Karana is mean " Cause ". The Three Cause of Welfare, the explanation of Tri Hita Karana is very simple : " It is keeping the balance and harmony between human beings ( man ) and God; keeping the balance among the humankind ( between man and man), and keeping the balance between mankind and the environment". And the last place of interest that you will be visit is Goa Gajah Temple, is located in Bedulu village, near from Ubud. Goa Gajah is an old temple for Hindus and Buddhist’s very great temple with great history about it.
